On March 28, Link Apartments℠ Mint Street team members and residents joined artist Tim Werrell for the unveiling of “Change,” a new public sculpture gracing the front of the community.

“Change” stands 12 feet tall and weighs 1,000 pounds. It is constructed of welded stainless steel with an internal armature of high-strength stainless steel tubing. The name references the location’s legacy as the site of the Charlotte Mint, as well as the evolution of the surrounding neighborhood into a vibrant live-work community from its more industrial past.

“At Grubb Properties, art serves to inspire our residents and beautify our buildings,” said Christian Collins, senior director, marketing. “‘Change’ achieves these goals, while providing a new landmark for the Gold District.”

Artist Timothy Savage Werrell is based in North Carolina and has been a professional sculptor for more than forty years. Inspired by nature, he is best known for his semi-abstract, monumental sculptures. His work is displayed nationwide both as public works and in private collections.

“Change” joins two pieces inside Link Apartments℠ Mint Street by Charlotte-based artist Hilary Siber Edwards. Her studio work explores the fractured aspects of perception through contemporary landscape painting and sculptures.

In the community’s Sky Lounge, Siber’s mural “Criss Cross” references the gridded map of Charlotte. The playful and intricate orthogonal geometry intersects with several large curvilinear shapes. These intersections and overlaps serve as a visual metaphor for the multi-layered complexities of the designs and infrastructures of the city of Charlotte.

Siber’s “Buffalo” stands in Link Apartments℠ Mint Street’s Zen Courtyard, referencing both nature and the buffalo nickel. The concentric circles and bright colors not only connect to her Criss Cross mural, but also represent the multiple layers of community at Link Apartments℠ Mint Street, Uptown, and the broader Charlotte area.
